Friday, October 26, RV Camping Without Hookups Boondocking Camping without hookups is often called “dry camping”, “camping off the grid”, or “boondocking”. While technically you are “dry camping” if you stop in a rest area or a Walmart parking lot, it is usually used to describe more extensive camping in a remote, primitive camping area. In some cases there may be designated camp sites but no hook ups, as is sometimes the case in Forest Service campgrounds. Very often, boondocking occurs on BLM or other public lands in open or dispersed camping areas where there are no designated camp sites.

The same principles of self-contained operation apply any time you aren’t where you have full hookups. Boondocking is probably more different from using commercial campgrounds with hook ups for RVers than it is for tent campers.

Typically, “Water and Electrical Hookups” are referring to convenient places an RV or trailer can plug in to for power and running water. Chances are, you should be able to plug an extension cord with a power strip for running some electrical items. I say plan your trip as if the electrical won’t be available, but bring a few things that will be helpful in case it is. A few helpful camping tips: If there’s a firepit, bring a couple Duraflame logs.

They last a couple hours, don’t take any special gymnastics to ignite, and you can always throw regular wood on after the duraflame is burning.

Polk Somebody recently asked me what I enjoyed the most about RVing. It didn’t take long for me to respond that it was the people you meet at the campground. I don’t know of anywhere else that you can meet complete strangers and within a couple of hours feel as if you’ve known them forever. People at campgrounds are some of the friendliest most helpful people you will ever meet. I have seen it time and again when a camper pulls in and they are having problems with something and their next door neighbor, whom they never met, is right there to assist them.

Camping without the modern convenience of full-hookup facilities of city/well water, sewer/septic and electricity. Primitive campers rely on ‘on-board’ systems for these conveniences; generator, batteries, stored water, etc.

Living in an RV Living in an RV is not difficult, but you do need to do some things differently than if you were at home. If you are an extended traveler and will be gone from your home base for two or three months, then there are additional things that you must consider and take into account before you depart. And, finally, if you are going to be a full-timer, then you have a long list of considerations and actions to take before you sell your house and move into a motorhome or 5er.

For weekend campers and extended travelers, the biggest headache is loading and unloading the RV—with your clothes, personal items, and food. After your first few trips out in your RV, you will soon discover that you usually pack far too many clothes from your wardrobe. You will find that you use a few clothes frequently, but seldom use most items.

Many people find it easier, food wise, to prepare many meals, especially dinners, ahead of time, freeze them, and then only defrost and warm them up when they are camping. Be a bit cautious, though, since RV refrigerators and especially freezers are not as roomy as what you are accustomed to at home. Never leave your home base without having at least some fresh water in your tank.

On the road to your camp site you will most likely need to make a few pit stops, occasions arise where you need to wash your hands, or the pets need a drink.
